Surfing in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia with East Coast Surf School

“LET’S GO SURFING!” I say—with the biggest smile on my face—to my friend Lucas.

We were in Fredericton, New Brunswick for work but decided to extend our trip to explore Nova Scotia after. It was my first time in Atlantic Canada (and who knows when I’ll be back) so why not make the most out of it? There were two things on my list: 1) Eat as much seafood as I can, and 2) Surf in the East Coast.

Now let me tell you that I am not a surfer. I have tried surfing a few times but I wouldn’t call myself one. Heck, I can probably count with my hands how many times I’ve gotten up on a surfboard! But that doesn’t stop me from going again and again. Growing up in the Philippines and as a certified scuba diver, I enjoy the open water. If there’s any activity that involves spending time in the ocean then you bet that I’ll be signing up for it!

Lawrencetown, a 30-min drive from downtown Halifax, offers one of the best beaches to surf in the East Coast. The waves are pretty decent and consistent, ideal for new surfers and beginners. The water temperature is still cold, averages below 15 degrees in the summer, but it’s not bad if you wear a wetsuit.

For all your surfing needs in Lawrencetown Beach, you can count on East Coast Surf School. We signed up for one of their daily lessons which includes the use of a wetsuit and surfboard for the day. The session starts on the beach covering the basics of surfing. Then the instructors accompany you into the ocean and assist you on a few runs—something I find very helpful as a forever surfing newbie. 😇 The lesson ends after an hour but you are free to stick around and surf for the rest of the day.

I am not going to lie and pretend that I rode some waves. If anything, those waves rode me. (It also doesn’t help that I’m past my prime for that upper body strength. 😂) Nonetheless, I had the best time trying to surf. At the end of the day, I was in my happy place—between the sun and the ocean. ☀️🌊
